Is Contra dancing like square dancing?
Pat Kelm answers, "People seem to know what square dancing is, but are unsure what contra dancing is. Contra dancing pre-dates square dancing and yet is still being done by large groups in New England, the Southwest, Northwest, and in larger populated cities such as Madison and Minneapolis. You will see some of the same moves as in square dancing, but the formation is usually long lines, very few squares. More emphases is placed on dancing with the musical phrase than in square dancing."

Showcase Information
- Multi dances are competitive events with each couple dancing for a placement. American and International Multidance events will be danced.
- Freestyle -- More than one couple on the floor at the same time, dancing for a numeric score and comments from our panel of judges.
- A formation has three or more dancers on the floor dancing together.
Dance Levels
- Newcomer is a beginning dancer who is stepping onto the competition floor for the first time
- Novice is a dancer who is early in their dance instruction but may have danced before on the competition floor
- Bronze, Silver, Gold are levels of private instruction with an Associate and Open category also available for each of these levels. Closed categories require dancing the patterns appropriate only to that level of the dance. Open categories indicates that a dancer will be incorporating material from higher levels to test their limits and test the material.
